When the world feels uncertain, it’s easy to question your next step. We may think clarity comes only after the chaos has passed, but what if the very feeling of wanting something — your desire — is the tool that guides you forward right now?
Many of us have been taught that desire is a distraction, something selfish, or even a sign that we’re not “spiritual” enough. In truth, desire is neither inherently good nor bad — it is directional. Like a compass pointing toward the next chapter of your growth, desire can lead you to the awareness you’re ready to embody, whether or not the desire is ever fulfilled exactly as you imagine.
Desire Is More Than the Outcome
We tend to think the purpose of desire is to get the thing we want: the new job, the perfect partner, the completed project. But from a spiritual perspective, desire’s deeper purpose is to move you along the path of expanding your awareness¹.
Sometimes that means the desire comes to fruition. Other times, it leads you through experiences that shape you in ways you could not have planned. Imagine your awareness as a mirror covered in dust. Being human naturally comes with some dust. Desires — and the process of pursuing them — help wipe that dust away, revealing more of the clarity and truth already within you.
Following Desire Without Attachment
Desire can be misunderstood as attachment, but they are not the same. Attachment insists on a specific outcome and timeline; desire simply points to where your next step may lie. The key is to follow desire with openness — to let it guide you toward growth, rather than gripping tightly to how it “should” unfold².
Ask yourself:
What do I feel drawn toward right now?
What qualities, awareness, or growth might this draw be inviting into my life?
How can I live the essence of this desire now, even before it manifests?
For example, if you desire a romantic partner because you want to share your heart, find ways to share it with friends, family, or even strangers through acts of kindness today. This not only fulfills the deeper need behind the desire but may also prepare the ground for that relationship to grow naturally in the future.
Desire as a Teacher in Uncertain Times
Uncertain times can make us hesitant to pursue what we want. But uncertainty is when we most need our inner compass. When outside circumstances shift rapidly, desire can keep you aligned with your inner truth, helping you choose actions that feel meaningful and energizing even without guarantees³.
In this way, desire is not an indulgence; it’s a navigation tool. When you learn to see desire as your inner compass, you begin to trust it as a guide that leads not only toward what you want but also toward the next version of yourself you’re ready to meet.
💛 This is just one of the many transformative lessons from my upcoming ebook, Holding Light When the World Feels Dim. Get ready to learn how to turn desire into direction, see beyond uncertainty, and hold your light steady no matter what’s happening in the world.
